The lake itself is a crater lake, formed by ancient volcanic activity, which has sculpted the landscape into a breathtaking natural amphitheater.

For the Oromo people, Hora Arsadee is far more than a geographical feature; it is considered a direct spiritual conduit to the divine. In Oromo cosmology, specific natural sites are believed to be particularly charged with ayyaana (spiritual energy), and Hora Arsadee is one of the most prominent. It is a place where the veil between the earthly realm and the celestial is at its thinnest, where prayers are heard more clearly, and blessings are more readily received.

The choice of Hora Arsadee as the heart of Oromo spiritual life is deeply rooted in its historical role as a bastion of cultural resilience. During periods of intense suppression, particularly under imperial and later Marxist regimes that sought to marginalize Oromo culture and religion, many traditional practices were driven underground. However, Hora Arsadee never lost its sacred status.
